Frailty

I can’t watch “The Exorcist”, “The Omen”, or any movie that makes religion scary. I just can’t. Then again, I have issues with any horror movie, scary film, even freaky movie trailers. Not for me. But do you want to see me turn sheet white, glossed over with beads of sweat? Throw in a church in a storm, a freaky priest, hounds of hell or some demon-devil child and my heart races. No. Not races. Breaks the sound barrier. I’m shaking out the heebies right now just thinking about it.

There was one movie, though, that I made it through without clutching my left arm. Frailty. Ever heard of that one? If you haven’t, find it, watch it. We’ll talk later. It’s a little known Matthew McConaughey/Bill Paxton movie that was more psychological thriller than horror, which is probably why I was able to stomach it.

It follows a very religious man and his two sons. In it, the father tells his children that God has decided to “show” him the demons that walk the earth and has given him, and his sons, permission to execute them in the name of God.  The father then brings his children with him while he stalks and kills these demon people. And soon, the kids are seasoned enough to take part in the freak show. Granted, the protagonist was a religious fanatic, but it was a pretty good movie. And it took a pretty creative person to come up with a storyline like that.

Why am I giving you movie reviews? No, I have become the next Ebert. I wanted to point out that Biblical FanFic isn’t just found in novels. It’s found in television, as highlighted in Michelle’s Supernatural Sundays blog posts. It’s found in movies, like I’ve highlighted above.  Sure some people like to say movies like “The Exorcist” are based on real occurrences – I’d rather lean toward fiction. I’d like to think heads don’t really spin around like that.
