Frailty

I can’t watch “The Exorcist”, “The Omen”, or any movie that makes religion scary. I just can’t. Then again, I have issues with any horror movie, scary film, even freaky movie trailers. Not for me. But do you want to see me turn sheet white, glossed over with beads of sweat? Throw in a church in a storm, a freaky priest, hounds of hell or some demon-devil child and my heart races. No. Not races. Breaks the sound barrier. I’m shaking out the heebies right now just thinking about it.

There was one movie, though, that I made it through without clutching my left arm. Frailty. Ever heard of that one? If you haven’t, find it, watch it. We’ll talk later. It’s a little known Matthew McConaughey/Bill Paxton movie that was more psychological thriller than horror, which is probably why I was able to stomach it.

It follows a very religious man and his two sons. In it, the father tells his children that God has decided to “show” him the demons that walk the earth and has given him, and his sons, permission to execute them in the name of God.  The father then brings his children with him while he stalks and kills these demon people. And soon, the kids are seasoned enough to take part in the freak show. Granted, the protagonist was a religious fanatic, but it was a pretty good movie. And it took a pretty creative person to come up with a storyline like that.

Why am I giving you movie reviews? No, I have become the next Ebert. I wanted to point out that Biblical FanFic isn’t just found in novels. It’s found in television, as highlighted in Michelle’s Supernatural Sundays blog posts. It’s found in movies, like I’ve highlighted above.  Sure some people like to say movies like “The Exorcist” are based on real occurrences – I’d rather lean toward fiction. I’d like to think heads don’t really spin around like that.

About Christine Hughes

A few things about me in no particular order: 1. I love the NY Jets (I know, I know...) 2. I love where I live. An hour to NY, Philly and the Jersey shore. 3. I have two boys and they make me laugh hard enough to blow liquids out of my nose. The hubs is funny enough to make me pee my pants. Not that it's ever happened. Of course not. 4. Being a writer is the best job on the planet, and not just because I can wear jammies to work, drink coffee by the gallonful, randomly catch up on my DVR'd shows, troll YouTube, flip on E! News and browse iTunes - all in the name of research. 5. I have some of the best friends in the world - they put up with my inappropriate jokes, foul mouth, strange musings and don't judge me if I drink too much wine on a Tuesday. Just sayin' - a girl needs her friends. 6. Represented by the most fabulous Michelle Johnson of Inklings Literary Agency. I fell into it with her - she is perfectly amazeballs. LOVE!

  1. I’ve heard of this movie but never seen it. I got turned off from all horror & scary movies for several years after seeing one too many with too much gore or torture. I just don’t dig that.Woman In Black brought me back to scary movies a little so I may start watching them again, only because Woman In Black was so well done and genuinely scary, not going for that shock value. It sounds like Frailty may be along those same lines. I will have to check it out one of these days. 🙂 I, too, am scared to death of movies like The Exorcist and The Omen. I’ve seen them but they traumatize me. Like you, Christine, I’m much more interested in movies that might actually happen (although that’s a whole new level of scary) rather than heads spinning. That really freaked me out. It can’t happen…right?

  2. I can’t do gore either…All those Chainsaw movies just gross me out more than anything. I think the scariest things ate the things that, in the back of your mind, just might happen. I mean, The Exorcist? Wasn’t that based on real events? I’m not saying the devil’s gonna jump in my body and spin my head around anytime soon but…… based on real events? Creepy!

  3. Christine, I can’t believe you did Frailty! One of my all time favorites!! Of course it helped that it is Matthew McConaughey, but that is one movie that I have watched over and over and STILL get chills at the end, every time!
