Happy Feet

IMG_12786_600FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND

One night I dreamed a dream.
I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to me and one to my Lord.
When the last scene of my life shot before me I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
There was only one set of footprints.
I realized that this was at the lowest and saddest times of my life.
This always bothered me and I questioned the Lord about my dilemma.
“Lord, You told me when I decided to follow You, You would walk and talk with me all the way.
But I’m aware that during the most troublesome times of my life there is only one set of footprints.
I just don’t understand why, when I need You most, You leave me.”
He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave you, never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you.”

This was one of my favorite poems growing up. It was taped to my desk and brought me comfort, strength, encouragement, hope and  joy. Its message is powerful and I have a difficult time getting through it without a lump forming in my throat.  The poem may not biblical be in the sense that it is written in the bible, but it does demonstrate God’s immeasurable love for us.

Can you think of any examples in the bible that could be related to the poem?

~Samuel 22-33 It is God who arms me with strength

~Matthew 28:20 I am with you always, even unto the end of the world

How about books or movies that could be related?

~Les Miserable when Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean) carries Anne Hathaway (Fantine)

I know there are many more!! I would love to hear your thoughts!

  1. This is perhaps one of my favorite poems of all time. Thank you so much for reminding you of these beautiful words!

  2. Hi there,
I never connected with the poem for some reason…but batting the idea around is a great idea!

As to scripture this one comes to mind:

    Isaiah 40:11 (NIV)
11 He tends his flock like a shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in his arms
    and carries them close to his heart;
he gently leads those that have young.

Movies…hmmmm…we’ll avoid the end of “Officer and a Gentleman” because…ya know…I would never have watched that, less than…five or six times. Hey, I was dating a lot at the time and they all wanted to see it. lol

Though he didn’t have the poem in mind, I would venture that Tolkien was making a similar connection (to the scripture) when Sam carried Frodo.

    Cheers,
    JM

  3. Oohh. The Sam carrying Frodo one is great! There are definitely moments in my life when a friend or loved one has “picked” me up when I needed them most. That scene was so emotional!

    and…

The first movie that came to mind when I wrote this post was the final scene in Officer and a Gentleman. Of course the song also jumped into my head and played on repeat 🙂 LOL!

  4. Spike Cordiner

How’s about Bond and Vesper in Casino Royale? He carries her through the trauma of seeing a man killed in front of her.

  5. I haven’t seen Casino Royale.. #ducksandhides…but I need to. I can imagine how dramatic this scene would be…adding it to my Netflix queue.
